I have offered private, in-hospital Fresh 48 sessions for a little over 4 years at hospitals in Ft Collins – Boulder – Denver and the surrounding areas. In the last year the number of hospital contracted photography companies that will stop by your room for a quick no commitment session the day after you deliver has grown in this area. With the influx of in-house hospital photographers it might be on your mind whether or not you want to hire a private photographer. So what are the benefits of hiring a private photographer?
In my book hiring a photographer for your hospital newborn session is equivalent to hiring your wedding photographer. You cannot get these memories back and the once-in-a-lifetime experience cannot be duplicated. So just as you likely researched the doctor and facility you wanted to deliver the newest member of your family, I encourage you to do the same due diligence on your hospital newborn photographer.
I have a lot of Fresh 48 sessions blogged on my site. This gives you the opportunity to see the variety in my work and decide if I am the photographer for you. My fusion films give you the opportunity to see many sessions “in-full” so you get the BIG picture, not the highlights. You can see that family’s story told in its entirety. We may even have the flexibility to see sessions close to your criteria: 1st time parent vs siblings; the hospital you are delivering at; with or w/out grandparents.
I book my Fresh 48 sessions a few months in advance. Balancing newborn due dates with my travel schedule is a tricky thing, but once a newborn is booked I decline all travel sessions that fall in your delivery window. Sometimes there is room on the schedule for a last minute hospital session, but we know babies come when they want so there is a ticking clock. A few of my moms book in the 1st & 2nd trimesters so as soon as you are ready let’s chat.
Nervous about having a stranger come to the hospital to document this time? Wonder if the siblings will be too shy when they visit? Let’s hug/chat before your session. A number of my clients book maternity sessions so this is a chance to meet, but if the hospital session is your first session we can always meet for coffee or chat on Facetime/Skype.
I send out a questionnaire to find out what your goals are for the session. This helps get us on the same page for the mood of the session, the types of images you want most or could care less about, and prepare everyone for any scheduled visitors (siblings or grandparents) we will have during our session.
Once you are booked you can check the stress of documenting these precious moments off your list and just enjoy the newness of your little one. Everyone in the family gets to be IN the pictures because no one is responsible for capturing your precious moments except me. Have you guys seen the Google Photo Free Up Space commercial where the every single time they try to take a photo the phone says STORAGE FULL? That video always makes me laugh. Do not worry, I bring lots of cards and the first thing I do at home is backup your images.
Last thing I want to address are my Fusion videos, which will still make you cry each and every time you watch it. I spend an average of an hour in the room with you, sometimes more if the siblings want nothing to do with me for a bit, to make sure I have everything I need to make your video. This is the biggest benefit to booking a session with me. If you are at the beginning of building your family these sessions are just as awesome when I come for baby # 2 or 3.
Still thinking about the right choice for you? Other considerations could be budget, quality, convenience, personalization, and available products. Maybe the Fresh 48 hospital images are not the right fit for you. If you want more information on what I offer, including in-home sessions, let’s chat.
