Family Photojournalism – There are so many words out there to describe this non-portrait way of documenting your family. Lifestyle, Documentary, Photojournalism, Authentic, Honest, Unposed… just to name a few. I spend a huge chunk of the first few weeks of my workshops deconstructing these terms and how they apply to offering sessions. However, this post is not about this applies to other photographers.
For my clients, these are just buzzwords we photographers use on blogs to describe our work and get our content ranked. If you happen to use these words in your search for a photographer hopefully you will find me on page 1 of your search. The bottom line is if you like what you see in my portfolio, blog posts, and social media posts does it really matter what I call it?
For your session, I just need to know how hands off you want to me to be and how authentic you want your frames to be. I am totally good guiding you to the amazing light in your house and then making you laugh why you do your activities. Do you want to spend the days before your session decluttering/cleaning? And by the way, this is what I call Lifestyle Photography.
If you want me to take pictures and video without interjecting myself into the experience, I can do that too. Your house is typically everyday clean and you may or may not pick up the kids’ toys so I don’t trip on them. This is what I call Family Photojournalism or Documentary Family Photography.
It’s all storytelling. It’s all real life. It’s all beautifully captured. It’s all the story of YOU. All you need to decide is do you want Fusion with that?
