Documentary Family Photography.  I want to start by saying the most important thing learned from this trip was empathy. This is hard for everyone and a little bit of grace + understanding can go a long way right now.

On Friday I hopped on a plane to head to State College for a Day in the Life with the Roys.  This was my first plane ride since the pandemic began 5 months ago. In non-pandemic times, I travel for photo sessions once a month to various places.  I never realized how sane and grounded that keeps me for my work and home life.  Honestly, being at home with my child non-stop for 5 months wore me out.  If you are struggling just know you are not alone.  Someone asked in a FB group what we were doing for self-care and my response was “I got on a plane and went to work”.

I wouldn’t have flown across the country for just anyone, but this is our 4th session (3rd full day) since 2016.  I love spending time with this family so much I wish we lived on the East Coast so we could do it more often.  My last visit involved snow, so this summer session was quite different.  If you didn’t catch that session, see it here. As you can see from the images below, we had a fabulous time and I can’t wait to start making their films.

In addition to my Day in the Life with the Roys, I filmed one of my D.C. clients on my way back to the airport on Sunday.  That session was originally scheduled for April when the stay at home orders were in still place.  I found the trip to be a lot less stressful than I thought it would be.  My 6 am flight to Baltimore meant DIA was practically empty, everyone was wearing a mask (properly), and I had a whole row on the plane to myself.  I also had an entire row coming back yesterday, but BWI had way more people in the airport than Denver did.  I just want to add, everyone had on a mask and were keeping their social distance from other passengers.

Don’t get too excited, I’m not booking any more travel sessions until 2021. I have sessions scheduled out every week locally until the end of the year.  If you live in Dallas, Los Angeles, Austin, and Central Florida I have already tentatively picked dates to come to your area next year.  Want details?   Reach out.
