Preparing for your in-home newborn sessions should not be a stressful event. Here are a few tips to think about.
1) Keep me in the loop. Newborn sessions are often booked months in advance. I pencil you in for your due date and limit the number of newborns I take each month to be sure I have the flexibility to schedule your session when the time comes. My newborns have been born as early as three weeks or as late as two weeks. When you head to the hospital send me a quick email or text to let me know you are close to delivering. Once you deliver the baby and know you are heading home we will decide on a day that is good for the session.
2) Dress comfortably. Yes you will be in the pictures, but don’t let this overwhelm you. Pick something comfortable to wear and coordinate with your husband. Not too matchy matchy, just colors & patterns that don’t clash. A typical newborn sessions last 2-3 hours so also wear something you are comfortable nursing in. You will likely feed the baby several times during the session.
3) Tidy up the house. Do not feel pressured to have your house spic and span. The main areas we will shoot in are the nursery, the master bedroom, and the family room. If there are items that need to be moved I will do so when I do a walk through of the house or as I shoot. I have been known to move chairs, couches, and cribs to get better light! Things like magazines or lamp cords might also be moved as needed. However your main priority is the new baby!
4) Feed the baby right before the session. I already mentioned this and we will certainly feed the baby several times while I am there. If you feed the baby immediately before the session begins this will help us get started immediately with a settled and happy baby.
5) Keep the number of people in the house to immediate family. If there will be other family members and friends visiting be sure to have them visit at the end of the session. Those first few days home with the baby are a little hectic and the more people in the house during the session the more distracting it can be. If you would like other family members in the photos this is certainly possible, please be sure to bring this up in our initial discussions.
