Excuse the iPhone picture, but in case you hadn’t heard on Facebook there is a new member of the CJP family, a brand spankin’ new Nikon d750. I know it hasn’t even been a year since I left Sony behind for the greener pastures of Canon, so another switch inside a year might seem crazy. Well yes, it’s completely crazy. This is the review that pushed me to click buy. I was blown away by his pictures. My comments below don’t include pictures, go see his because they are amazing.
I missed my Sony Articulating screen. I know some people see it as gimicky, but for almost 4 years I shot with Sony DSLRs and SLTs that had AMAZING live view capabilities and screens that allowed me to talk to my clients while shooting from the chest. Shooting with a camera glued to my face actually took some getting used to. While I have gotten used to it, shoved in the very back of my mind, during newborn shoots where I am standing over a hospital bassinet or a crib I dreamed of it. I used to be able to take shots holding the camera over my head and looking up the at screen to focus. Thanks to the d750 that is a possibility again.
I missed my focus points. Yes, the center focus point on a 6D is amazing. Coming from an a77 with 19 focal points, 11 cross-type, it was really difficult to come to only 9 with 1 cross-type. That ONE was amazing though. Focused in near darkness, but now I have that on the d750 with more of them. WOOHOO!
I missed a WB button. This, along with a lack of focal points, is the biggest issue on the 6D. You can go into the quick menu to modify WB, but there is just nothing ‘quick’ about it.
Amazing low-light images. I haven’t had a chance to fully test out the high ISO images on a d750, but at a glance I am impressed. The 6D was amazing so this new camera has big shoes to fill, but I think it is up to the challenge. I have a newborn hospital session this weekend and can’t wait to put it to the test.
I have always wanted an interval timer in camera. I haven’t even really had time to play with this, but I am happy to be part of #teamNikon to have this feature.
I had my reservations. I have several friends that suffered the d600 oil/dust issues and a few with AF issues on the d800. It would make anyone gunshy about buying a new camera from Nikon for a first run. So, I stopped by ProPhoto Rental in Boulder to see when they would be getting one in I could rent. They had one so I rented it on the spot for the weekend. One of the best things to come from leaving Sony was the ability to rent gear locally. I almost bought a d600 last year but the inability to change aperture in live view and no “exposure preview” in live view were deal breakers for me.
I had some issues. If you use a Sigma ART lens please make sure you have updated its firmware with a dock, or your lens might not focus in Live View. I also had the weird experience of the d750 forgetting the fine tuning value I entered and reverting to 0. That was a problem because the combination of the rented d750 + the lens I borrowed from a friend were front-focusing. It is frustrating to think you nailed focus when chimping on the back of the LCD only to get home and see on the iMac your images were off by a hair. Now that I have my own d750 in hand and the Sigma 35 1.4 has been updated both of those issues appear to be gone.
There are some things I do not love, might even say hate.
I haven’t completely left Team Canon. I am still a CPS member (which really it seems like I will never be a member of the Nikon version since the d750 isn’t a “professional-level” body) and until I am 100% sure of the switch I kept one of my bodies. I might even prefer the 6D for my own personal images, particularly to take selfie images with Chloe. I was *this* close to getting a Mark III, but you had me at flippy screen.
I am going to spend the next few weeks really testing the camera, particularly shooting with the flip screen and comparing the video between the 6D and the d750. The new layout is taking some getting used to. I keep mixing up the aperture and shutter speed dials because they are the opposite of the 6D.
Stay tuned for a real picture heavy review a little later in the month!
