Let’s just be honest, it took a long time for this new version to be ready. It was initially expected to launch in September and here it is May when the public version has gone live. So what’s all that great about ProPhoto 6 and was it worth the wait?
Update** this site was built using the starter template Morgan from The Design Space. I have also written about the Top 7 Reasons I Love ProPhoto 6.
First, my eyes hurt. This really has nothing to do with the product but rather my enthusiasm, or let’s call it what it is obsession, in getting my website moved over. I think of website design like a puzzle and figuring out how to create what I want is a lot of trying different pieces to see what fits. I have spent way too many hours in front of a screen this week, but now that I hit GO LIVE I will take a few steps back and let my eyes rest.
Two, I was in Beta mode for several days while I tried to figure out where the hell everything was before the public launch. When they say it’s a different product that isn’t an understatement. The backend is completely different. All the ease of menus and using ProPhoto you have become accustomed to are GONE. I am not finding it as intuitive to jump into, but once you get used to it then it’s not so bad. I am still trying to find a few items that I can’t seem to locate. I am now just waiting for the rush of tech/bug issues to die down before I send tech support any message related to finding stuff.
Three. There is this awesome feature called Test Drive. So for those who are worried about getting their site ready and having it “under construction” for a lengthy amount of time, don’t be. The world will see your site still in ProPhoto 5 while you work on ProPhoto 6 behind the scenes. However, there are a few REALLY big things that I discovered once I went into Test Drive mode that you should be aware of.
Just a few things to be aware of. Otherwise your site will look the exact same to your visitors while you work on P6 behind the scenes.
When they first announced P6 would be responsive I had this vision of how I would design my site. This live site is different, maybe better, than what I planned. I am still tinkering with a few things and learning my way around the features. I plan to immediately add my custom grids and grid galleries back on here when they are supported in P6. They say a month but we’ll see.
Are you thinking of making the switch? A few things to keep in mind as you prepare to do a redesign.
Are you making the switch? Have fun! Take a look at the site by clicking on the menu links. If you are on a mobile device be sure and look later from a computer because I think that makes that biggest impact 🙂
