Yes I started another collaborative photography project, a storytelling photography blog. Between this new one, Let Them Be Little, and Cherish this Day, I have begun hoarding weekly images instead of sharing them so I have something to post. I haven’t posted on Everyday since September 21st, but it’s for a good cause.
When my workshop ended earlier this month we were all a little sad to see it go. Let Them Be Little and Cherish this Day are both collaborative projects initiated from participants sticking together after a workshop ends. So I pitched the idea to see if any of them were interested. They were, so we started the task of developing the project and determining how it would function.
Having set up two of these now I wanted to share a few thoughts in case you, yes YOU, are thinking about creating a collaborative photography project of your own.
Hosting the project- The “where will the project live” can be both simple and complicated. For both of my projects (LTBL and TSWT) I decided to buy the domains and self-host. With LTBL I initially tried to use a free WordPress blog (WordPress.com), tried really really hard. Then with TSWT I even tried to use a self-hosted WordPress blog (WordPress.org), but I have discovered I am just a ProPhoto girl at heart. So both LTBL and TSWT use ProPhoto templates, the same one in fact, Minimalist. The cost to host and buy the domain is negligible, but if the cost is a hardship consider asking the participants to split the bill.
Finding a name for your project- The reason I ended up using domain names with – in them was because the regular domains for both my projects were parked and for sale for over $1k each. Not going to happen! So before you settle on a name for your project check on domain names for self-hosted or for the domain prefix on WordPress.com. You will notice none of the projects I have listed use the name of the workshop. Come up with something new and creative for your project!
Frequency of posts- How your participants will participate depends on what you can handle as a group. Both LTBL and CTD started with monthly posts and now have weekly posts. Start small, then periodically decide if you can handle more posts. For The Stories We Tell we have decided to post weekly. Each week (Mondays and Wednesdays) we will have posts. Each month we will each be responsible for an individual post and then to contribute one image to a collaborative post. You can see today’s collaborative post here!
So what will we post? As a group we decided the best thing about storytelling was to document stories to remember. Images that preserve something worth remembering for us. So please join us each week as we share these images, individually and as a group.
Inspired yet? If you already participate in a collaborative photography project post a link in the comments!
