In the last 13 days, I have made eight lifestyle family films so far. Yes, it is as insane as it sounds, but it also means I have listened to a LOT of music trying to find the perfect soundtrack for them. I have decided my taste in music for my films can be summed up in the following question.
If the answer is yes, likely I have searched out the song to see if it could be licensed. Yeah, I can’t just slap any song off the radio onto my films as much as I would love to.
So I spend a ridiculous amount of time picking songs and then searching the major music licensing companies SongFreedom, TracksMusic, and Musicbed to see if it is available. A few of my all-time favorite artists for licensing are Katie Herzig, The Lumineers, The Careful Ones, Holley Maher, Ingrid Michaelson, and Mindy Gledhill.
This week I discovered and licensed songs from The Paper Kites, Sheffield, Jetty Rae (used in lifestyle family film below), Rictor, Handsome and Gretyl, and Marie Hines. Want to hear the songs I chose for my last few films? Hop over to my Family Photojournalism Vimeo channel and stay tuned for the release of all the families I captured this Fall.
Just in case you were wondering, the actual theme song from Parenthood can be licensed from SongFreedom. I used it in both of the 2017 films linked below. You’re welcome. And HEY if you want to me to come over and film you during a big family dinner with this song playing in the background you should definitely holler at me. Twinkle lights and food sound like a perfect documentary family photography film to me.
