ramblings on a friday morning…
i just finished reading kate’s 59 page pdf from her breakout session. basically it is ramblings from inside her head on her journey as an artist and professional photographer. this is not a how-to on light, business, or really anything else. if you are open while you read about her journey, mistakes she has made, why she shoots the way she does, and how she uses personal projects to grow, then you might find some inspiration too.
then i wandered over to her facebook page and liked her (yeah not sure how i hadn’t already done that, but whatever).
all of this (particularly when it all occurs in the first hour of the day while i sip my coffee) reiterates the need to be true to who i am as an artist, shoot what i love, show the world what i do, and hope others love it enough to hire me.
i haven’t shot after reading the breakout (that was less than an hour ago) but really there was nothing there i didn’t already know or do. i shoot daily, i look for dramatic light, i take pictures of clients that make ME smile and the ones that will make them smile as well (you know, everyone look at the camera and smile pictures), and i just hope that all of this shows in my work and my work can be easily identified to others when they see it. nice to know someone else feels the same.
i don’t take perfect pictures. i strive to but perfection to me is something very different than a technically perfect photograph. whether it is a tilted camera, a little motion blur, a cropped doggie, a cluttered background, or slightly soft focus, these photos are me. if the emotion is there and the story is there and you engage with the photo, that is a perfect picture. i have been working on my portfolio and while i should remove some because of technical flaws they are still there.
i agree with kate, i want my clients to cry when they see my work. ugly cry… and i may have gotten a little choked up myself when the mom below told me she loves this and wants them side by side on the blank wall in her daughter’s room which has been waiting for THIS photo.
thanks for listening
