LOL who says they cooperate? The key to getting better at lifestyle photography for me was to let the children dictate what I shoot. I shoot what I see. I laugh and make jokes when I need to, but I just let the moments unfold.
Even in a client session I tell the kids that as soon as I shoot what their mommy wants me to shoot, I will let them tell me what THEY want me to shoot.
A picture of you taking a picture of your mommy
Playing peek-a-boo at Target?
Jumping off the banister onto the couch?
Check. Check. Check.
Even with Chloe I don’t “setup” shots. The majority of the time I see Chloe doing something I find interesting and I grab my camera. That’s it. Sometimes she demands I get my camera and take a picture of her doing something.
It was time for me to do another 90- second challenge and when Chloe sat down on the couch with her stuffed puppy I told her I was going to set a timer and take pictures until it went off. This will be up on Let Them Be Little on Thursday.
Okay but maybe you are looking for some actual advice for shooting lifestyle pictures with a little more direction.
Most importantly, let the experience be fun! In-home sessions are just big playdates where I bring my camera 🙂
