I have this thing I do. During a client session (or even on a playdate) I make sure to take as many photographs of a mom as possible. Because I realize these are likely the only photographs she is IN.
I take several pictures of my daughter a week. No one will ever say there was a lack of photographing her. In fact, if we have another child I have set the bar pretty high and I will have to do the same for the next child to avoid the whole “they loved you more than me why are there no pictures of me?” issue. I take pictures of my husband with our daughter as well and really enjoy the ones where I don’t get the “another picture” look from him.
BUT here is the thing. Technology is wonderful. Almost everyone has an iPhone or Android phone and these have really decent cameras now. You also have timers on point-and-shoot cameras that will allow you to set the 10 second timer and run to get into the frame with your children. I bought a cheap remote (sub-$10) off of Amazon to take my shots. It even gives me 2 seconds to hide the remote!
GET IN THE PICTURE!!!
I read this story that went viral on Facebook and realized I already did this but I hope it is reminding others to do so as well.
You want your children to remember the moments and look back and see you as part of the picture.
I am still a big advocate of having professional pictures done once a year. Frame at least one of these and display it in your house. Purchase a keepsake album for your kids to have later in life. On the other side make a commitment to get IN your own pictures at least one a week or once a month.
A few of my fellow photographers took these of themselves (we call them selfies). Granted we took these for a workshop BUT we all make the commitment to get IN more pictures.
A few of my own
They get so big so quickly. Get IN the picture.
Thanks so much to Jamie, Sherri, Aimee, and Kami for letting me share their photographs.
