Something on my mind lately has been: Are we photographing our kids too much?
I am pretty laid back when it comes to shooting daily. For the last 4 years I have done a Project 365 in a very lazy and slacker manner. I shoot daily (mostly) and then when I have time I run through and choose a daily image. While I took way less personal pictures last year, she still has plenty to look at. I made sure to get into the frame at least once a month using wifi apps (like the picture above taken on my D750 with my iPhone as the remote). When people came to visit or we hopped on a plane I documented that as well. I printed several images for her room and I hope to get all the walls covered in the next few months. She likes to tell me the “stories” of the pictures on the wall and guess how old she was when it was taken. Her new favorite thing to do is run off with my phone to watch the images and videos using the Memories feature in iOS 10. It allows her to created “slideshows” of people or combinations of people the phone has tagged through facial recognition with included songs. She gets so tickled, can you imagine what it will be like when she learns to make her own films using Premiere Pro like I do?
One of the buzzwords I have seen going around on the web recently is legacy portraits. I do not have many images of myself as a baby/child, but Chloe will have an overwhelming amount. Even in the first year when I almost had no idea what I was doing she will still have so many images. She really enjoys sitting and looking at the three books from that first year. So many of those images have awful light and focus, but she doesn’t care. She also has no idea there is another entire hard drive of images she could explore. If she did would it devalue the book and the images in it? Will my future grandkids ever see the images that I are not printed on the walls or in an album/book?
Today was a snow day for her so we spent the day being lazy around the house. I considered shooting a Day in the Life but instead I decided we had to take a selfie approximately every hour. Dragging around the camera on a tripod and setting it up was irritating, but we ended up with some cute pictures.
So for the last 5 days I have made an effort to keep up with the daily edit & upload. I cannot in good conscience promise I will continue this trend, but when I do selections you will find them in this gallery. Here are my choices from the first 5 days. I might miss a few days and on others I will have so many to choose from picking just one will be torture. I will commit to doing at least one Day in the Life and one 90 second challenge. Here’s hoping I have some great ones for her book at the end of the year.
