I will say this time I really gave it the old college try.
Despite knocking up against the limitations of film as a mostly indoor shooter who fails to stick her subjects in “good light”, I can now say I honestly love film. Film can have such depth and brilliant color it makes shooting it so appealing and addicting. However, that is of no use to me if I can’t get an exposed negative in the light available to me where the moment takes place. So let’s start with a few of my personal favorites!
Okay now that I buttered you up with the good let’s talk about the bad. While I have had some client film images that I absolutely love, I have also had WAY too many with soft focus, less than ideal exposure, or (if I may) crappy facial expressions. With digital you can take a shot, then verify focus and facial expressions before you move on. Waiting for film scans is a bit like Christmas morning, you don’t quite know what you will get. There are bound to be some shots you don’t remember taking as well as some you thought you nailed and now seem lackluster upon arrival.
Nothing has deterred me from shooting more film, not even the high cost of developing and scanning. I am determined to continue working on my craft and getting my film “keep” rate as high as I can get it. Now that summer is almost here I might even spend more time outside in order to shoot more film. Now THAT is crazy 😉 #shootfilmstaybroke
