Okay it’s important to note that I didn’t wake up and decide to buy a d750 because my 6D was lacking in image quality. I have been extremely happy over the last year with the 6D and what it has produced. So happy in June I bought a second one as a backup and to shoot video on. A few weeks ago I flew to Houston to shoot a Day in the Life and I used a combination of a Mark III and a 6D. Using that Mark III reminded me of what I had lost going from my Sony a77 to a Canon 6D, all those glorious focus points. After using a Mark III for a weekend I was pretty close to buying one, but before I could pull the trigger the reviews on the Nikon d750 started to pour in. At first the “flippy screen” caught my eye. Then the awesome high ISO images and post-production recovery in this d750 review had me drooling. I couldn’t sleep. I was reading every review I could get my hands on. I finally decided to just go buy one, jump feet first if you will, but on the way to the store I stopped by ProPhoto to see if they would have one to rent anytime soon. Perhaps trying to stomp down this notion of using 3 different brands in a single year. Because let’s face it, that is crazy.
A week in and this camera continues to surprise me. Let me say a few things about what I love.
The flippy screen is FANTASTIC and while I am sure a huge chunk of photographers won’t use it, standing over a crib with this thing is magic.
Setting custom white balance is easy and amazing. I am actually using my ExpoDisc again. Also that “dropper” in LiveView to set the WB off of something white or grey is AWESOME. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
The image quality is as good as the 6D. Let me say that again, it’s as good as the 6D. Maybe it is how I shoot or where I shoot, but taking images side by side with a d750 and a 6D I am just not getting the huge differences other photographers are getting. Maybe a slight edge, but nothing to jump up and down or even switch brands for.
While I hated that the exposure settings were not carried over between still and movie modes last week, I am learning to love it. As long as I had proper settings for the current scene before I switched over to movie mode that is. Takes some getting used to, but that just means I can leave the shutter speed at 1/50 (24fps) or 1/125 (60fps) in movie mode and go back and forth without the need to hugely adjust the SS.
Ummm that Auto ISO in movie mode. I haven’t used it too much, but it makes continuing to video when you switch directions much easier.
Things others might find useful
Dual card slots. I have never shot with a camera that had dual slots so that just isn’t a big deal to me yet. Next time I shoot a DITL, maybe.
The high ISO images are very usable. If you are upgrading to a d750 from an older camera or a crop the impact will be huge.
What I still hate
Seriously the Nikon WMU app is horrid. I had to Google to confirm you cannot in fact change any settings in-camera or in-app after they are connected. The EOS app is miles better. As a remote trigger it’s acceptable, but really I would love move control from my phone.
I still can’t one-hand shoot and BBF. I also can’t one-hand and adjust ISO. Both of these are possible on the 6D.
Really haven’t had any significant time yet to take images for a review. I am hoping to get one out next week. So here is just one image from my hospital newborn photography session yesterday.
