We just got back from a 9 day trip to Walt Disney World for Halloween. I already wrote about why I left the DSLRs at home and only vacationed with my Fuji x100t. If you want to know why I love my Fuji you can read about that too.
One thing I debated was purchasing the Memory Maker that Disney offers for $199. I ended up purchasing it, but not necessarily for the images. Say what Colie? Let me be frank. Nearly every park photographer at Disney is using a kit lens + speedlight. If you know me then you know I am not a big fan of flash, certainly not direct flash.
So why did I shell out a few hundred dollars for images I didn’t really want? Did you know that in addition to taking images with their cameras the park photographers will take images with your personal camera/phone? Now I want you to think about that. They are reducing the chance that you will buy their product by taking the image with your own equipment. THAT is why I bought the PhotoPass. I was lucky, we had my mom and my sister-in-law with us and I handed them the Fuji x100t to take the full family images I wanted. My mom took the image at the top of this post, but on the few days we were alone I handed my phone or camera to the park photographer. For the Fuji I tested the settings on the group in front of us at Character Meet & Greets and turned on facial recognition before I handed it over. The park photographers got a few images with me in them that I couldn’t have otherwise gotten. With a few characters Chloe insisted I stand next to her while she met them. I can’t be IN the photo and take it at the same time. See the dilemma?
The next time I head to Disney I still want the option of handing my Fuji over to the park photographer to get the low-light/high-ISO/no-flash images I prefer. I am willing to pay $200 for the convenience.
