SHARE
Documentary Family Photographer – Earlier this month I traveled to New Orleans to share a day in the life of my dear friend Jenn. I left my child at home with pink eye to be cared for by daddy at 8am on a Saturday morning to go do my job several states away. I almost didn’t get on the plane because when Chloe doesn’t feel well all she wants is mommy. I am so glad I sucked it up and went. I had the most amazing time and Chloe & James did just fine by themselves back in Colorado.
I sat down today to sequence the video for their day in the life. This is the part where I look at all the video footage I took, select the clips I intend to include in the slideshow, and then adjust all the timings to the music I select and still images I plan to include. Oh did I mention I listed to the song over and over (50 times isn’t much of an exaggeration) so that I really know if there are words I need to match to images and videos? After I am done sequencing this is the point where I watch the video over and over making the smallest adjustments until I able to watch the video from beginning to end without stopping. Then I know I am done. I know I am satisfied, quite often in the case of newborns I am crying. By the end of the process Chloe can sing the songs I use in my work, word for word. She often demands to watch specific videos by telling me the name of the song I used.
After starting I decided to just focus on their morning, specifically making breakfast. It dawned on me that the day with Jenn’s family had a bigger impact on me than I thought. See since returning from New Orleans I took my office and put it in the basement, we got our dining room table back. Not a big deal, right? Oh but it is because we are now eating as a family. On Saturday and Sunday mornings James and I are taking turns cooking and then we sit down and eat, no iDevices allowed. Even if it is only for 30 minutes we have started eating nightly dinners together as a family around the table.
