Boulder Newborn Photography | It’s been a little over a year since I wrote my first blog post on preparing for your newborn session, so I decided it was time for a refresh.
When do you contact me? If you have a hospital newborn photography session we will discuss a date for your in-home session at that time, otherwise send me an email within a few days after delivery so we can get your session scheduled. When you book I pencil you in for the weekend after your due date, but we all know babies come when they want to come. We will pick a time best for your family and if you have younger siblings we will definitely schedule around their naptime. For dads we try to avoid gametime, because while I know and understand the photography session trumps the game, happy dad = happy session!
What to wear for your session? Everyone (mom, dad, and siblings) will be photographed, but the images will be natural and candid. The most important thing is that mom feels comfortable and can easily breastfeed if needed. If you have opted for breastfeeding images I suggest a nursing tank. Everyone else should like what they are wearing and coordinating colors and patterns are preferred to matching colors. If anyone doesn’t like their clothes it may come across in the images.
How to prepare the baby? The baby will likely need the least amount of prep. I ask that you feed the baby 30 minutes before the session is scheduled to begin so we have a full belly to start. We will certainly take as many breaks as the needed to allow the baby to feed, but I like to attempt the full family images right out of the gate if there are young siblings included. Please select a few clean white onesies (short-sleeved) and an outfit you love laid out. I will also use a swaddling blanket in a few images.
How to prepare your house? I cannot emphasize this enough, a perfectly sterile clean house is not my concern. You just had a baby and I certainly do not want you trying to declutter your house for the session. Everyday clean is good. The main areas I utilize are the master bedroom, the nursery, the living room (couches), and the largest window area in your house. If I need to move anything I will, so let me worry about the background of the images!
Can we include the pet siblings or grandparents? I am always happy to include the family pets in the frame. I am very comfortable with dogs and let them smell my hands first thing so they get to know me. If you would like to invite the grandparents over for the tail end of the session I am happy to take those images. Your children will thank you when they are older!
